I didn't read this book -- I listened to it on tape. I don't think I would have been able to get through it otherwise. Du Maurier's Rebecca is a classic -- it's not some kind of political tract tied to a decade the way this very poor sequel is. This book abounds with New Agism, rabid feminism, and politically correct homosexuality. It's very much a book of 2001, not 1951. Like other readers, I may just re-read the original just to get the nasty taste of Rebecca's Tale away from me.
