Amazon.com Dr. Watson's proclivities toward gambling on horses open the door to this very interesting mystery, which finds a famous playboy and equestrian, Sir Robert Norberton (Robin Ellis), in multiple jeopardy. First, his estate has come under the control of his late sister's brother-in-law. Second, his creditors are going to ruin him if his prize horse, Shoscombe Prince, doesn't win the Derby. Third, his own head trainer has declared him mad. Finally, his sister, Lady Beatrice (Elizabeth Weaver), who kept him together body and soul with her own funds, has vanished following an argument with her brother, and Sir Robert has actually given away her favorite spaniel. The dog becomes a crucial link in the solution to the disappearance, but it is Holmes who must get to the bottom of a sprawling mystery. An intriguing puzzle, expertly produced for this episode of the Granada Television series based on Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories, and wonderfully performed by Jeremy Brett and Edward Hardwicke as Doyle's famous duo. --Tom Keogh

Partly Boring!, March 16, 2002

This is not one of my favorite Jeremy Brett Sherlock Holmes. People would give excuses that since it is a late film Jeremy Brett didn't act good when he was sick. The plot and directing (filming) is just boring. Jeremy Brett and Edward Hardwicke are fine it it. It it about a racing horse who only a couple of people know he is being raced. At the end they find a dead body, from a couple of days ago hidden. This is definately not one of the best!
