Sherlock Holmes (Jeremy Brett) and Dr. Watson (Edward Hardwicke) are brought into an investigation of the murder of a farmer, whose body is found in the woods adjoining land owned by a wealthy property magnate. The victim's own son has been accused of the crime, and he isn't helping matters by refusing to tell police what he and his father were fighting about shortly before the killing. Holmes's investigation pulls the search in a wider direction, but the revelations are no less ghastly. Typically brilliant work from Brett as the ideal incarnation of Arthur Conan Doyle's fictional hero, while Hardwicke brings stellar support as the courageous, good-hearted Watson. The Granada Television production is genuinely satisfying for Sherlockians and casual viewers alike. --Tom Keogh

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful: Boscombe Valley a lovely diversion, June 8, 2001 Reviewer: A viewer from The South I always love all of Jeremey Brett's Sherlock Holmes episodes, but this one was particularly delightful. This is the only Sherlock Holmes episode in which British actor, James Purefoy, appears. This episode should be listed individually in the James Purefoy filmography here, but it is not listed individually. This was one of Purefoy's first film roles after leaving the Royal Shakespeare Company. Buy this episode, you will love it.
