Amazon.com Sherlock Holmes (Jeremy Brett) fetches Dr. John Watson (David Burke) from the latter's Paddington medical practice on an urgent mission: Colonel James Barclay (Denys Hawthorne), commanding officer of the Royal Munsters, has been found dead in his home, his comatose wife (Lisa Daniely) beside him. If that's not mystery enough, Holmes also concludes that there was a stranger on the premises, and something else: something ate the Barclays' pet canary. While Holmes and Watson work quickly to clear the widow's name of any suspicion in her husband's death, a weird, badly stooped man (Norman Jones) is playing conjurer's tricks in pubs and holding onto the secret of the Barclays' misfortune. This episode in the long-running Granada Television series is a fascinating puzzle all around, highlighted by a long flashback into a grim tale of treachery and revenge. --Tom Keogh

At first, one thinks Conan Doyle was off on a twisted tangent. But as the story progresses, it becomes evident this is a story about long-lasting love and survival. This is a good story which brings Holmes to a very troubling conclusion, but proves to be told as it should be told. As the story unfolds, we already want to know more about the mysterious "crooked man." Try this Holmes mystery, you might enjoy the new approach.
